Florida Lake
Located in suburban Roodepoort, south of the railway line, Florida Lake boasts a bird sanctuary where a lake is home to a host of waterfowl that makes bird watching here a delight. The park also has a putt-putt course, an Olympic-sized swimming pool (that recently underwent repairs) and an adventure park for children. On public holidays the place is usually buzzing.
From the air, the lake is a sizeable one, surrounded by large shady trees, and a spot where locals come to launch their canoes and sail boats for relaxation, after which they braai or picnic around the lake.
Florida Lake is flanked by residential properties to the north, and park lands to both east and west. It serves as a green lung in a rather densely built part of Johannesburg. Whilst it has not received any of the recent attention that other parks, like Diepsloot and Diepkloof Parks, have it nonetheless provides the neighbourhood of Florida with a green space that makes weekends that much more pleasant.
Cradle of Humankind and Sterkfontein Caves
Welcome to Maropeng (the official visitor centre of the Cradle of Humankind) and the Sterkfontein Caves. Maropeng means “returning to the place of origin” in Setswana, the main indigenous language in this area of South Africa.
The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site is an easy drive of about an hour from Johannesburg or Pretoria.
By coming here, you are coming to the birthplace of humanity.
Soweto
Soweto is a township of the city of Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa, bordering the city's mining belt in the south. Its name is an English syllabic abbreviation for South Western Townships. Formerly a separate municipality, it is now incorporated in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality,
Suburbs of Johannesburg.
Soweto consists of a community of extremes. On the one hand there is abject poverty and on the other hand there is extraordinary wealth in the upper class suburbs such as Diepkloof Extension and Selection Park. Some of the houses in that area sell for over one and two million rands. Today Soweto is the largest Black residential area in South Africa and has a population of more than 3.5 Million people with the land in extent of 120KM squared.
Johannesburg Botanical Gardens
The Garden has seven distinct gardens: the Herb Garden, the Hedge Garden, the Succulent Garden, the Shakespeare Garden, the Rose Garden, the Chapel Garden and the Arboretum (a collection composed exclusively of trees).
The Herb Garden contains aromatic plants which have medicinal benefits, culinary uses and cosmetic purposes. The Hedge Garden consists of 58 species of hedges, and the Succulent garden, which may be visited only by appointment, is planted with more than 2 500 species of succulent. The Arboretum has a variety of indigenous and exotic trees, including Californian Redwoods, silver birches and English oaks.
The Shakespeare Garden features herbs which the English playwright referred to in his works. Adjacent to the Shakespeare Garden is the beautiful terraced Rose Gardens which is planted with over 4500 rose bushes. To the east of the Rose Garden is the Chapel Garden, which is often used by bridal parties for wedding photography.
