General

Situated in historical Bathurst Street, in the famous university town of Grahamstown, Oak Lodge Guest House offers a relaxed atmosphere and authentic homely bed and breakfast accommodation. The lodge offers affordable accommodation for up to 60 people sharing. There are conference facilities for up to 60 delegates, with catering for functions and receptions. The conference rooms look out onto a covered patio that leads to the sparkling pool, where barbecues and private parties can be organized. The dining room serves lunch and dinner on request. Oak Lodge is within easy walking distance of the Central Business District, Rhodes University, the Supreme and Magistrates’ Courts, the Museums and many of Grahamstown’s historical places of interest. Tours can be arranged from the hotel to Settlers Dam, and to a multitude of malaria-free game parks and nature reserves, some with Big Five safaris. Local sporting facilities are available for all major sports, including golf, tennis and squash. Adrenalin sports in the area include skydiving, micro-lighting and rock climbing. Horse riding, hiking and 4×4 trails are also popular options and the stunning beaches of the Sunshine Coast are just a 40-minute drive away.

Regarded as the heart of the tourist route known as ‘Frontier Country’, Grahamstown, along with towns like Alicedale, Sidbury, Riebeeck East, Hogsback and Alice, is part of one of the most diverse ecological regions in South Africa, with thousands of hectares devoted to nature and game conservation, and a history seeped in forts, conflict and strife.

Grahamstown lies at the intersection of four very different climatic zones and its unpredictable weather is part of the excitement. The Oldenburgia hiking trail, Grahamstown`s own hiking trail, is a two-day circular trail starting and ending in the city, and there are another two shorter walking trails in town – the Dassie Krantz and Gowie.
